Price of Tilapia Is Going High Because of Fish Shortage
Feb.24, 2011

After Chinese Spring Festival, tilapia producers have begun to work and fish price is going high as expected.
Currently, price of tilapia in Maoming, Guangdong is 8 yuan/kg for 0.3-0.5kg sized fish, 10 yuan/kg for 0.5-0.8kg sized fish, 0.6yuan/kg higher than that of before spring festival and 1.4 yuan/kg than last year.
Since Jan.1 of 2011, south China went through a series of cold fronts, this caused large quantity of tilapia froze to death, most of them are small sized fish. Plants now are getting back to production after Chinese New Year and there would be a big competition of purchasing fish from farms. As supply of fish in farms falls short of demand, it is sure there would be another wave of price raise.
