Price of Tilapia Rising High in Cold Winter

Jan 11, 2011

Due to continuous cold fronts, the weather in South China has been rainy and cold since New Year's Day, and price of tilapia has been rising up unexpectedly instead of going down.

On Jan 5th, purchasing price of tilapia in Maoming, Guangdong was 7.1yuan/kg for 0.3-0.5kg sized fish, 9.1yuan/kg for 0.5kg and above fish, 0.4yuan/kg higher than last year. On Jan 6th, purchasing price in Beihai, Guangxi province was 7.2yuan/kg and 9.2yuan/kg for above-mentioned sizes. And the price was 6.8yuan/kg and 8.8yuan/kg in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province, 0.1yuan/kg higher than last year.

According to Mr. Chen, a buyer and processor of tilapia in Maoming, Guangdong province, the reason for price raise was lower than usual quantity of fish this year at aquaculture farms. Some farmers were prepared to keep the stock during winter, expecting better price next year.

One industry insider from a big processing plant in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province verified that factories indeed had raised purchasing price. He said nowadays most plants had finished the majority of their orders, but they still had to purchase fish to fulfill new orders in order to keep production line going. This demand caused fish price go up.
